Why Eclipse Sinks – Certified Quality

Better Steel, Better Processes, Certified Quality

In Today’s post we will discuss the fact that Eclipse sinks are tested and certified to meet building code and for use with computer operated fabrications  (CNC) machines.

All components of the plumbing system including sinks and faucets are REQUIRED Eclipse 513 Marin Sinkby International plumbing Code, Uniform Plumbing Code and Canadian Plumbing code to be certified by an accredited agency to meet quality standard found established by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers.)

In order to meet the certification requirements not only do the sinks need to be tested but the factory needs to be inspected every six months. As you might expect this is an expensive process.

Because many granite contractors have been offering a “free sink” as an incentive they have been looking to buy the cheapest sink possible after all they are giving them away. This has produced a market for cheap uncertified product.

I have often heard fabricators who are using these cheap sink say that no one checks to see if the sink meets code. They are likely right. BUT IF THE SINK IS NOT TESTED HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR ARE GETTING? Do you want to spend thousands of dollars on a expensive countertop only  to have your sink turn yellow or brow? All sinks are a different shape so if you have an untested sink you cannot replace it with a good on later. You can only replace it with another bad one.

Eclipse sinks are also CNC certified. Our customer tell us it is the most consistent size sink on the market which means that your contractor can cut the top before they receive the sink and if you should find a way to damage the sink a new sink of the same model will fit.

Eclipse sinks are tested and certified to meet CNC requirements and ASME standards. The quality is certified!

Need help with a bad stainless steel sink?

Do you have a problem with your stainless steel sink? We may be able to help even if you did not purchase the sinks from us!

You are not alone. There is a trend among countertop fabricators to give away free sinks as an incentive. This has become so common that it is no longer an incentive but a near requirement. Because the sinks are given away “free” many fabricators have found the cheapest possible sink to give away without regard to quality, whether they meet building codes or if the sink will last as long as the countertop.

Eclipse Sinks – Better Processes

Better Steel, Better Processes, Certified Quality

In today’s post we are going to discuss the Better Processes that are used to manufacture Eclipse sinks; individually pressed bowls that are welded together and machined finished brush finish.Eclipse Stainless Triple Bowl Sink

Eclipse premium sinks are pressed one bowl at a time then the individually pressed bowls are welded together. This process allow more control of the stretching and more uniform thickness. It also reduces nickel lose an important ingredient in 304 stainless that hardens the finish and extends the life of the bright finish.

Eclipse stainless sinks are machine finished which applies a uniform brushed finish. Brushed finish is the best finish for a stainless sink because it hides minor scratches and can be repaired. I have a three year old sample sink I carry with me in my van. One time I was showing the sink to a prospect. I told him the steel was so good I could repair scratches. He proceeded to take out his keys and scratch may sample sink. I took the sink to his shop and removed the scratches. It worked so well I still use that same sinks a sample and I challenge people to find the scratches. No one has.

Many of the less expensive sink are pressed both bowls at one time. This process called annealing stresses the bowl and often small dimples form on the corners where the bottom meet the sides. These are not defects but imperfections that are part of the process.  This process is much quicker and less expensive.

Most cheaper sinks are hand finished. This can product a good finish but will most often be inconsistent within the sink or from sink to sink as the workmen have good days and bad. Sink made in China and are made shortly after the Chinese New Year can be particularly inconsistent as the factories train new workers after the turnover that is so common in Chinese factories after the holidays.

If you use the process we use to repair scratches on a sink made with cheaper steel it will often “flash” which means the repaired area will be a different color than the rest of the sink.

Eclipse Stainless – Better Steel

Better Steel, Better Processes, Certified Quality

Eclipse 501 Diablo SinkIn today’s posting we will discuss Better Steel.

Eclipse sinks are made from 304 stainless steel. By definition 304 stainless is 18 per cent Chromium which give stainless steel its shine. Many sinks on the market do not have the shine that Eclipse sinks do.
At a recent trade show in Las Vegas the Eclipse sinks were on display along with a number of other sinks several that could be seen from the Eclipse booth. We challenged visitors to find a shinier sink. Some found cheaper sinks but no one found a shinier sink.

304 Stainless also contains at least 8 per cent nickel. The nickel hardens the finish so it last a long time. Sinks without enough nickel may look good on the day they are installed only to turn yellow or brown as they age. We have a number of installations where the sinks have been in for seven or more years and are still as shiny as the day they were installed. One fabricator told us that the sink he uses looks great but he hates to go back after a year or so because the sinks turn colors.

In a later article we will discuss testing and how an untested sink may not be what it is advertised to be.

Stainless Steel Sink finishes.

There are several finished on stainless steel sinks. The most common are mirrored (bright and shiny like a mirror) and brushed. Eclipse Sinks have a brushed finish because of its attractive appearance and because you can repair minor scratches which are inevitable. With a mirror finish once it is scratched there is no way to repair the finish.
I have had a sample sink that I carry with me to visit prospects. One day I was telling a prospect that Eclipse sinks used quality steel and because of the brushed finish I could repair scratches. He looked at me then reached in his pocket and pulled out he set of keys and proceeded to scratch my sample.
I took the sample into his shop and repaired the scratches. I still carry that sample and tell prospects about the incident and challenge them to find the scratch. No one has. Note that cheap sinks will “flash” and show the repair spot.
