Summer Home Maintenance Tips

We all know that summer is fast approaching. There are a whole set of home issues to deal with come the hot months. Here is a short list of things to keep in mind and make sure your home stays safe and running well:

Make to check the exterior of your house

  • Open your windows. The warm sunlight does more than liven your mood, it kills harmful bacteria that has built up over the winter.
  • Take care of space heaters. Dust and clean the heaters you’ve been using all winter and make sure the cords are attached safely and securely. Store them somewhere sturdy that won’t get wet.
  • Prep furnace for the offseason. Check the filter and change if necessary. Also vacuum the openings, vents and ducts.
  • Prep air conditioner for use. Change or clean the filter, and clear out any shrubs near it that could get in the way of proper ventilation.
  • Wash the windows. Grime builds up easily over the winter. Brush away dirt, then get to the scrubbing. Make sure to get the screens and trim as well!
  • Check hoses and sprinklers. Turn on the outdoor faucets to make sure they work properly, then go through and check your hoses for cracks or leaks. Sprinkler heads can get clogged as well.
  • Check home exterior. This is a simple one. Just take a couple minutes to walk around your house and trust your eyes to do the work. Do things look off? Paint peeling? Cracks in bricks? Over-filled gutters?

We usually stick with kitchen tips, but we thought we’d branch out today and help you out with total home maintenance. Did we miss anything? Are there things you do for your home every spring/summer?

Kitchen Design Tips

Martha Stewart is well known for her cooking and DIY crafting…but she also has some great kitchen design tips that are quite practical and easy. Click here to check out all 50, but here are our favorites:

  • Time-Saving Stations: Have all the related utensils stored next to each other. For instance, a coffee station. Have the coffee maker on the counter, with the bean grinder next to it, and coffee cups stored above it, along with sugar packets or whatever else you use for your morning java. This makes your kitchen more efficient.

Rolling islands are incredibly handy and versatile

  • Rolling Kitchen Islands: These are incredibly versatile. They can hide wastebaskets, and be moved around for a variety of uses including food prep, buffet-style meals, or even a portable table for those quick dinners.
  • Hanging Racks: Pots take up a lot of space in your counters, and are always a hassle getting in and out. Save space, and energy, by installing a couple hanging racks. This is tough in small kitchens, but it can be done!
  • Customized Drawers: The more drawers, the better, according to Martha. Take the time to organize each one. Add dividers and containers to customize them for exactly what you need. If you simply take time to think about the purpose of each drawer, it’ll save you from having them overflow or get stuck opening and closing.
  • Handy Outlets: This can be tougher, but it is nice to have outlets exactly where you want them to get the most use. Think about things that need to be plugged in; blender, coffee maker, electric kettle, microwave, toaster, George Foreman grill, and many others.

Choosing the Right Bowl

When choosing your new kitchen sink, there are more options than you may realize. Yesterday, we talked about choosing the right gauge. Material is another consideration, as well as color and finish. Today, however, we are going to talk about how to choose the right number of bowls for your sink. You can get single, double and even triple bowls from Eclipse Stainless, as well as many other sink manufacturers.

  • Single Bowl:

    Single bowl

This is the larger option, although it does come in many different sizes. . If you have large dishes you are washing on a regular basis, or cooking for a large family, this is probably your best bet. It offers the most space by far and will never leave you confused about how to best use the other bowls, because there are none! This is most common for home bars and second kitchens.

    Asymmetrical Double Bowl

  • Double Bowl: This the most common option. This allows you to wash dishes in one side, and dry or rinse on the other side. Most double bowl sinks will accommodate a rack of some sort for dishes to air dry. This option has options within it — for instance, you can get a double bowl that is a larger, almost single bowl on one side, with the other side being a smaller bowl used almost entirely for washing fruit and things of that nature.

Symmetrical Double Bowl

  • Triple Bowl: This option gives you two larger bowls on the outside, generally, with a smaller bowl for washing fruit and veggies in the middle. The combines some of the positives of the other two, but is also very large. In a smaller kitchen, this may not be a great option. If you are family that goes through a lot of fresh food that has to be washed, this might be the most convenient.

    Triple Bowl

There are really two main considerations when choosing a bowl for your sink: 1) How do you wash dishes? 2) What kind of cooking do you do? It is generally that simple. Ask around, try to find friends who have different options that you could see and try out, and make an informed decision!

The Importance of Sink Gauge

When getting a new kitchen sink, most people just think about the look. What looks classiest? What look will fit best with my counters, cupboards and appliances? What material compliments the fresh paint the best? A crucial part of choosing a new stainless sink, however, is the gauge.

Essentially, the gauge is simply how thick your sink is. The lower the number, the thicker (and higher quality) the sink is. They range from 22-15 gauge. At most consumer retailers like Lowes or Home Depot, you will find 22, 20 and 18 gauge models. The premium manufacturers, though, will stick to 15 and 16 gauge sinks — like Eclipse Stainless.

Look is certainly important. But you want to make sure to keep quality top-of-mind when you are looking at any kitchen remodel. Make sure you have all your facts, and look at the raw numbers before making any big decision.

DIY versus Hiring Professional

In the down economy, many people have resorted to Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects with hopes of saving a ton of money. That is certainly something to consider when thinking of home remodeling, but also beware of the potential costs of DIY versus hiring professional. Here is a small list of things to consider when making those decisions:

  • Scale of project: Are you replacing
    DIY Gone Wrong

There are potential pitfalls to DIY projects

a toilet, or adding an entire room? Are you building a pergola, or attacking your back yard with a full-size deck? With smaller projects, DIY is probably okay, and mistakes would be relatively easy to fix. Large-scare remodels, however, require large-scale money for any mistakes you might make.

  • Safety of project: How complex is the work you are trying to do? Doing some woodwork with drills and power sanders won’t pose a ton of danger, but working with power saws and any form of electricity is generally more than a beginner should even be attempting.
  • Sacrifice of project: How much time are you willing to give up to do something DIY? Keep in mind that most projects will take much longer than you expect them to. Something will likely go wrong, or you may not even have a concept of how long things should take. Many DIY-ers are notorious for having home renovations left incomplete for months because they simply ran out of time.

To recap: Scale, Safety and Sacrifice are all things you should consider when deciding on whether or not you should hire a professional for your next home project.

Especially when you’re doing a kitchen, keep in mind all the small things YOU will be in charge of purchasing and keeping track of. With countertops, for example, do you want the responsibility of buying a slab of stone and getting it cut just right for your needs? Do you want to handle your plumbing needs with installing a new sink and making it just right for your space? There are often more things that come than you could think of!

If you have further questions, give Eclipse Stainless a call today and we’ll help you out.
