Summer Home Maintenance Tips

We all know that summer is fast approaching. There are a whole set of home issues to deal with come the hot months. Here is a short list of things to keep in mind and make sure your home stays safe and running well:

Make to check the exterior of your house

  • Open your windows. The warm sunlight does more than liven your mood, it kills harmful bacteria that has built up over the winter.
  • Take care of space heaters. Dust and clean the heaters you’ve been using all winter and make sure the cords are attached safely and securely. Store them somewhere sturdy that won’t get wet.
  • Prep furnace for the offseason. Check the filter and change if necessary. Also vacuum the openings, vents and ducts.
  • Prep air conditioner for use. Change or clean the filter, and clear out any shrubs near it that could get in the way of proper ventilation.
  • Wash the windows. Grime builds up easily over the winter. Brush away dirt, then get to the scrubbing. Make sure to get the screens and trim as well!
  • Check hoses and sprinklers. Turn on the outdoor faucets to make sure they work properly, then go through and check your hoses for cracks or leaks. Sprinkler heads can get clogged as well.
  • Check home exterior. This is a simple one. Just take a couple minutes to walk around your house and trust your eyes to do the work. Do things look off? Paint peeling? Cracks in bricks? Over-filled gutters?

We usually stick with kitchen tips, but we thought we’d branch out today and help you out with total home maintenance. Did we miss anything? Are there things you do for your home every spring/summer?
