4 Common Remodeling Mistakes

Summer is a popular time for remodeling. Nice weather makes quite a difference when trying to add some value to your home. It is also a nice way to boost your chances of selling, and will make potential buyers rather happy. There are, however, common mistakes when people are deciding which home renovations to undertake. Here are four of them to watch out for:

  • Too fashionable. The more modern and “hip” your remodels are now, the more out-of-date they will seem in 5 and 10 years. Skip trends, and instead go with classic styles that match your home.
  • Quick design. Your value will diminish if the project is not well thought out and thoroughly planned ahead of time. It is worth the money to hire an architect who knows exactly what you will need to do for your project to be a success. You’ll regret it later if you simply try to “wing it”.
  • Over-investing. When thinking about a remodel, consider the return-on-investment, but also the percentage of your home’s value that the remodel consists of. For instance, kitchens are generally around 5-15% of your home’s overall worth. Be wary about putting more than that value into it, as it won’t likely be returned.
  • Going green. Don’t get us wrong, we love the environment, but when selling a home, the high price of going green does not often pay off. They also are not known for being the most stylish products. Just make sure to know what you are getting into when you go green.

How much water goes through your faucet?

We’re hearing a lot of talk about water these days…conserving it, donating money to countries who need it, running out of it for some desert states and countries, etc. You might be wondering, how much water is actually used in comparison to how much water there is in the world? Lucky for you, we found the answer!

The amount of water consumed versus how much there is an incredibly small number. Now, of course we are not saying to be arrogant about it, but it certainly gives a good perspective. Now if only we could find cheaper and easier ways to make salt water drinkable, we would be set!

New “Green” Options for Your Counters

[Disclaimer: This blog post will feature some brands names. Our desire, however, is not to give you a commercial, but to simply show you some of the cool new things on the “green” market for your kitchen.]

Green products are popping up just about everywhere you look. From the gas you put in your car, to the food you eat, to the clothes you wear – you are able to take just about any part of your life and add some green. And now you can start doing it with your counters as well. There are a few new companies and technologies out there helping the cause.

The first is Kirei Board. Essentially it is made up of leftover grass products and pressed into a board. It is designed to be strong, lightweight, durable, and of course environmentally friendly. It can be used for anything you would use wood or stone products for including cabinets, furniture, flooring and countertops. It can also be painted and finished with just about anything you would like, making it incredibly versatile.

Here is an example of a coffee table made of Kirei Board:

Kirei Board looks much like original wood.

The most pricey and newest option in the world of “green” countertops is recycled glass. They are pieces of art in and of themselves, and look especially beautiful with the right lighting. Take a look at a couple examples:

So the next time you are looking at getting new countertops, consider going green. There are sure to be even more options at competitive price points in the coming years.

Getting the Most Out of Small Living Spaces, Part 3

This week we’ve been focusing on how to maximize your living space when your square footage is less-than-desired. We’ve already given you 10 tips, and today we’ll finish up with four final ones! Are there any we missed? Let us know in the comments, or on our Facebook and Twitter pages!

  • Place “fun stuff” in closed furniture. There are all kinds of armoirs and cabinets these days that are made to stow away TVs and computers when they are not in use. Maybe you can even go with an old vintage roll-top desk for your laptop. This makes your home feel less cluttered with electronics and cords.
  • Be merciless with clothes. Clothes tend to somehow multiply throughout the years. When space is limited, though, these need to be one of the first things to go. Make a rule that when you buy something new, you give away something as well. Or maybe you get rid of those jeans that are too small, but you’re hoping to get into in a year.
  • Organize your entrance spaces. These are notorious for becoming veritable disaster zones. Coats on the floor, shoes scattered everywhere, and things getting trampled on are regular occurrences for these spaces. Luckily, with the organization craze of late, you can buy benches with drawers, wall-mounted cubbies, and of course hooks for your coats and hats. Take advantage of all these tools!
  • Keep only what you need in the bathrooms. There is no reason to have 5 bottles of shampoo in the shower, or a pile of extra towels lying in a corner. Utilize glass shelving, and stand alone organizing drawers.

Getting the Most Out of Small Living Spaces, Part 2

Yesterday we brought you five tips for maximizing your smaller living spaces. There’s a good chance you have at least one room (and probably more) in your home that feels cluttered, or like there just isn’t enough room for everything. Today, we’re bringing you five more handy tips!

  • Pick storage containers wisely. Keep in mind that squared containers will maximize space better than rounded containers. Also do research about sizes. There is enough variety out there that you can probably find a storage bin with the exact dimensions you’re looking for.
  • Keep clutter from ever entering your home. Delete yourself from junk-mail lists. Take a pass on the free samples at the mall. And finally, consider leaving the toiletries in the hotel. Leave them where they are, because every hotel in the world has them. If you are honest with yourself, you probably don’t need 10 travel size shampoos.
  • Stay away from Costco and Sam’s Club. If you are low on storage space, don’t buy in bulk. You may have to go shopping just a little more frequently, but it will be worth it not having extra food and paper towels piling up on countertops and in pantries.
  • Your kitchen table can double as an office desk and a craft bench

Make furniture multi-function. Your kitchen table can function as a desk during the day, and a dining space at night. Use handy baskets to keep office supplies easily stored away at night. Don’t have a spare bedroom? Get a sofa with a pull-out. Buy yourself at ottoman with a lid and storage space inside it. Make the most out of every piece of furniture.

  • Rotate your decorations. Don’t have enough room for the fun decoration you want to have out? Instead of crowding them, just rotate. Put your fun stuff into a couple baskets, and just rotate them each month. This will keep your rooms fresh and decluttered at the same time.

Check back again tomorrow for the final installment of this short series!

Getting the Most Out of Small Living Spaces

We would all love a huge beautiful kitchen wouldn’t we? Even on this blog we like to post pictures of clean, spacious, luxurious spaces. The reality, however, is that most of us are probably living in smaller rooms than we would in our ideal world. The rest of this week, we’ll give you tips for maximizing your smaller living spaces and making them feel much bigger than they may be.

  • Be extra thoughtful about what you save. If your living space is limited, that extra toaster you have just might not fit. Be sure to really think about the things you want to have in your house, and part with those that aren’t necessary or sentimental.
  • Regarding the sentimental stuff: Is it something you can take a picture of? Or just keep a part of? Don’t be impulsive about it, just consider the different options.
  • Limit the amount of space you give to any chunk of items. For instance, keep only the books that will fit in a bookshelf. Or keep only the toys that will fit in the toy bin. Keeping extras of what you have storage for creates a feel of clutter almost instantly.
  • Don’t keep every single children’s project. Now obviously you want to keep some of the things your children do. To keep every piece of homework they ever bring home, however, will lead to boxes upon boxes of papers in your home that you likely won’t see the majority of ever again. Again, just something to think about.
  • Make use of all the space you have. Consider hanging hooks on walls for towels, coats, etc. Hang bulletin boards on cabinets or doors. Keep things that aren’t used very often in the back spaces of closets.

Check back in tomorrow, and we’ll have 5 more tips for you!
