Fixing and Cleaning a Stained Stainless Steel Sink

I received a call recently that a year old Eclipse sink was dull and stained. The customer sent me these pictures and asked me how to “fix’ this stained sink.

The consumer told me she was using one of the “bubbling cleaning” products. The instructions on the can said they could be used on a number of surfaces including stainless steel. I do not know if that cleaner caused the issue, but the sink was obviously dull and had a definite brown hue. In short, it looked like an aging, poor quality sink. When she sent me the picture, I called and discussed the issue. Based on the conversation the user was so scared of damaging the sink she had used liquid cleaners only.

In many past articles on this blog, I have recommended Bar Keepers Friend and a plastic scrubbing pad like a Scotch Brite pad.

Below are the after pictures. It is the same sink as the on in the pictures above. Eclipse sinks are made to be used and cleaned.

How to Correct Low Pressure on a Faucet

Sometimes a faucet will lose pressure over time. Several things can cause this condition.

If you have hard water, the internal parts can build up minerals. Even if you have a water softener, this can occur because most water softener systems are only installed on the hot water line.

If there are minerals built up on the faucet they can often be removed by soaking the parts with the mineral build-up in white vinegar over night.

On Eclipse faucets the most likely place for minerals to build up is on the head; the switch where you change the flow on the faucet, the openings in the head particularly smaller openings used in the flow mode, and the back check valve.

On the older model Eclipse faucets, you can increase the effectiveness of the white vinegar soak by removing the button over the switch. See video below.

Minerals and other debris can also catch in the back check valve. The valve is the smallest opening so it is often the first to get clogged. Here is a video that shows how to remove and clean the back check valve in the head of an Eclipse Faucet.

Cure for a Loose Faucet

If your faucet has come loose from the countertop is can be because it has not been installed correctly. The faucet not only needs to be tightened to the countertop with the nut but also the two screws on the fastening gasket need to be tightened to put back pressure on the plate to lock in the faucet.  Below is a diagram of the faucet and a video on how to make sure your faucet is tight to the countertop.
