Granite Countertop Care and Maintenance

There are a lot of suggestions on maintaining your granite countertop. Here is one article I found searching the internet. The original article can be found here.

By Brian Gabriel

If you are considering having granite countertops installed in your home you want to know how to care for them so that they stay looking perfect. Granite countertops have a luxuriant, polished sheen and a smooth, natural beauty that is evocative of a rich timelessness. Their rugged durability and elegant look complement any interior design and especially lend themselves well to the rustic feel of a log home.

It’s important to know a few simple tips to care for your granite to keep it looking polished and new. You don’t want to use the wrong product and permanently damage your new countertops.

Short-Term Care

The most important thing to do is a simple daily wiping and cleaning. This is the same as you would do with any countertop, but it’s important to use the right cleaners for granite. Many cleaners are too acidic and can damage the sealant that is applied to granite countertops (more below). This can allow chemicals to seep into the pores of the granite and cause discoloration.

Choose a non-acidic cleaner, such as Formula 409 Natural Stone Cleaner, and you won’t have to worry about stripping the sealant from your granite.

Be very careful not to use an acid called HF or Hydrofluoric acid. It is used in many rust removers and it will severely dull, etch and pit a polished granite countertop surface.

Long-Term Care

In the long-term you should apply a sealant two times a year to seal the pores in the granite and protect the surface. This is as simple as wiping the sealant onto the granite and wiping it off.

One good sealant is called StoneTech BulletProof Stone Sealer, but for a cheaper alternative you can use plain old car wax.

With these simple steps you will keep your granite countertops gleaming with an understated elegance that is both functional and appealing.

Marching to the Beat of a Different Drummer

ANO Inc., the Midwest Distributor of Eclipse sinks and faucets is constantly on the lookout for ways to use the cheap sinks some countertop contractors are giving away with their countertops. We are looking for these uses because they do not belong in your very expensive countertop. We found this article about the Stanford band member using a stainless steel sink as a drum.

Talk about your different drummers. Tiggy plays the kitchen sink. She has it strapped across her hips like a snare drum and bangs at it with sticks, producing a rattle-whompus-Seussian sound, like a junkyard truck crossing the tracks. Nice.

One edge of the old stainless steel sink, the one facing out, is broken off and lethal as a switchblade. No worries. Tiggy knows what she’s doing. I think.

We will continue our search to find uses of cheap sinks that do not harm kitchens.

Low Water Flow From My Kitchen Faucet – Part 2 Obstructions in the Water

So you checked and there is no apparent build up of minerals. This does not mean there are none. We still recommend  that you soak the head in white vinegar just to make sure.

Now what?

Mud in Faucet

The next step is to remove the aerator which is the small screen at on the head where the
were the water comes out. You can remove the aerator with the blue tool that came with your faucet or if you do not have it any small adjustable wrench. When you remove the aerator check for build up or other debris. If there is debris what does it look like. If it looks like micro pebbles or even sand or dirt you may be getting this debris from the water. We had a customer in Indiana who had repeated problem with their faucet plugging up and even a leak at the flow to spray switch. We changed the faucet and sent it to the factory who took it apart. It was full of mud.

Upon further investigation it turn out that a contractor was working on the water lines in the customers neighborhood and broke the water line causing mud to enter the water supply. This mud not only plugged up the Eclipse faucet but a number in the neighborhood. Please note this is VERY rare.

It is more likely that debris is coming from small debris in you water line. We have seen metal shavings, small micro pebbles and even sawdust in the aerators. This debris can be left over from the remodeling process.

When you remodel you need to flush the water line before you install the faucet. To do this, turn off the water lines at the wall under the sink. disconnect the flexible water lines from the faucet and plac

e the end of the line in a bucket, run the water by turning the water on at the wall.  Continue to flush the lines until you do not see any debris in the water.

Why 16 Gauge Sinks are Not All Created Equal

If a sink is marketed as a 16 gauge sink you would think it would be about the same weight as all the other 16 gauge sinks on the market. You would be wrong.

Why?

Gauge is a measure to the thickness of sheet metal. For stainless steel the thickness should be .0625″ for 16 gauge and .0050″ for 18 gauge.

When you draw stainless sink from a 16 gauge sheet of stainless steel you are stretching the sides of the bowl out of the steel. This results much of the sink being substantially less than 16 gauge. Some manufactures are careful to talk about 16 gauge steel and sinks on separate lines on their brochures and never talk about a 16 gauge sink. It is perfectly legal even if deceptive. To create a 16 gauge sink you need to start with steel thicker that 16 gauge.

I have compared the Eclipse 18 gauge (18 gauge is lighter than 16 gauge) to a sink sold on the internet as 16 gauge. That sink is light than the Eclipse 18 gauge. Eclipse has documentation from independent labs regarding compliance with ASTM 112.19.3 and the gauge and grade of the steel. Others talk about it. Eclipse proves it.

A few years ago when ANO began talking about the fact that the major model codes UPC shieldrequire sinks to be certified to meet the ASTM requirement to fabricators other sink manufacturers said it did not matter but we began to see misleading practices to imply certification. Some sinks had sticker that said “meets UPC standards.” This did not mean they were certified to meet the standards only that the manufacturer who was already cutting corner was telling you that they met the standards. Also the standards require the certification be stamped on the sink. The sticker itself indicates it does not meet the standard.

Some sink importers claimed certification based on Chinese certification of the factory. One importer had brochures with a Chinese certification printed on the brochure. A few months later the brochures disappeared and I was told that they were recalled because the certifying agency forced them to recall the brochures because it was not the correct certification. The new brochure from the importer made no reference to certification.

Lead Free Faucet Standards and Freendo Faucets

ANO, Inc. located in Arlington Heights, Il represents Freendo Faucets. One of the criteria that ANO used in selecting to represent Freendo Faucets was they complied with the lead free requirements of the new Federal Law and NSF/ANSI 64. Freendo meets and exceeds the standard. The kitchen faucets ANO offers from Freendo have a copper water channel which is lead free, Copper is lead free so the water channel is lead free not just less than the .25% as required by the law.

Here is the lead free certificate from Freendo:

Freendo ANSI 64 1

Eclipse Stainless and Lead Free Standards

January 4, 2014 the low lead standard NSF/ANSI 61 which requires no more than .25% lead in the water channel became Federal law. Eclipse Stainless has always been made from lead free stainless steel instead of traditional brass and therefore always been lead free. To comply with the law, however, they need to get certification of complains. Below is that certification of compliance.

Why Welded Stainless Steel Sinks are Better than Single Pressed

There are two ways that undermount double bowl bowl sinks are made.

The bowl can be drawn (pressed) one bowl at a time and then the bowls are trimmed and welded together to make a two bowl sink.  The sink can also be constructed in a single pressing (called annealing) creating both bowls at one time. This eliminates the cost of trimming the bowl and the welding step making the sink much cheaper.

The primary disadvantage of the single press method is you are stretching two walls out of the center of the sheet steel. Below are pictures of a pressed single bowl before it is trimmed for welding. Notice how much steel has been stretched out of the sides of the bowl. If sink is made in a single step that steel needs to be stretched out of the center rail making them thinner.

Bowl 2Bowl 1

Single pressed bowls will be lighter than welded bowls if pressed from same steel. Single pressed (annealed) bowls are more likely to have minor imperfections in the corners between the sides and bottom. These imperfections will show up as waves or dimples.
