Kitchen Safety Tips

It’s never too late, too early or too often to talk about safety. We’ve often talked about how the kitchen really is often the hub of your home. It can also be one of the most dangerous, with gas lines, water lines, electricity, hard metals, etc. Here are just a few tips to keep in mind, as well as pass on to your children. It might even be good to laminate this list and put it on the fridge!

  1. Locate all appliances away from the sink or any other water source.
  2. Keep appliance cords away from hot surfaces, like the range or coffee maker, and away from wet surfaces.
  3. Only plug counter top appliances into GFCI-protected outlets.
  4. Do not use appliances that have been wet.
  5. Unplug all countertop appliances when not in use.
  6. Do not leave countertop appliances on when unattended.
  7. Clean the stove and oven regularly. Also be sure to clean the exhaust hood over the stove.
  8. Keep the cooking area surrounding the stove and oven free of combustibles like hand towels, pot holders, paper towels and recipe books.
  9. Do not leave something cooking on the stove top or in the oven when unattended.
  10. Give the refrigerator room to breathe. Make sure there is enough room behind the refrigerator to let the air circulate.
  11. Vacuum the refrigerator coils every two or three months to eliminate dirt and dust build up, which reduces efficiency and can become a potential hazard.

Painting Tips the Pros Won’t Tell You

Painting. Kids love it. Adults hate it. If you’re doing a single room, a DIY paint job is not terribly difficult. Multiple rooms, or an entire house, is a totally different story. If you’re really ambitious, here are some tips from Popular Mechanics that the pros won’t tell you. We’ll give you the first few, then you can head on over to their slideshow if you’re interested in the rest!

1. Sand away flaws

Some painters will actually call themselves professional sanders, because it’s more fitting of where their time goes. If you want smooth walls, go over them with a sander first, because there are more imperfections than you realize. Especially makes sure to cover holes from nails or other places small ridges might pop up.

2. Use tinted primer

It’s a bit dangerous painting without primer, as you might be doing 3-4 coats to cover up the old color. You may also have dull spots over filled in holes or cracks. You might get lucky with just 2 coats of paint especially if you use a gray primer, or something close to the final color.

3. Blue painter’s tape is your friend

Regular masking tape has a tendency to get wavy and actually let paint through – defeating the purpose of the tape. You also want to make sure the blue tape is applied properly. Go over it with a putty knife after you put it on to make sure all the gaps are sealed up. Your hands won’t do a perfect job.

Don’t Ignore Small Plumbing Issues

There are few things that can harm your home more than a plumbing or water issue. Water damage is just about the most expensive and extensive kind of damage your home can incur. How does one prevent this from happening? The number one thing is to be proactive. Don’t let little issues go unnoticed. When you see something, call up the plumber. It is much better in this instance to be safe than sorry – because you will be very sorry.

A few things to look out for:

  • Spike in water bill. This is a tell-tale sign that you have a leak somewhere. Small changes are common, but if you open your bill and are a little surprised, don’t just write it off as someone in the house taking more showers.
  • Change in meter readings. Similar to the first one, if there is a big change in the readings and no major change in usage, you know something is off. This could be another sign of a water leak.
  • Wet spots in yard. If you notice patches where the grass is growing a little faster or places where it is always damp, even after dry spells, you might have a leak. This could also be a sign of septic problem if you have that type of system.
  • Running toilets and dripping faucets. These are relatively minor fixes and should be taken care of as soon as possible to avoid paying extra each month and letting those problems escalate to further issues.
  • Cracked or damp foundation. Water can do bad things to your home’s foundation. These things could mean something simple like bad drainage or something bigger like a large-scale leak or crack somewhere.
  • Mold/damp carpet. These should be obvious of a leak somewhere in your home, whether from plumbing or other issues.
