Summer is a popular time for remodeling. Nice weather makes quite a difference when trying to add some value to your home. It is also a nice way to boost your chances of selling, and will make potential buyers rather happy. There are, however, common mistakes when people are deciding which home renovations to undertake. Here are four of them to watch out for:
- Too fashionable. The more modern and “hip” your remodels are now, the more out-of-date they will seem in 5 and 10 years. Skip trends, and instead go with classic styles that match your home.
- Quick design. Your value will diminish if the project is not well thought out and thoroughly planned ahead of time. It is worth the money to hire an architect who knows exactly what you will need to do for your project to be a success. You’ll regret it later if you simply try to “wing it”.
- Over-investing. When thinking about a remodel, consider the return-on-investment, but also the percentage of your home’s value that the remodel consists of. For instance, kitchens are generally around 5-15% of your home’s overall worth. Be wary about putting more than that value into it, as it won’t likely be returned.
- Going green. Don’t get us wrong, we love the environment, but when selling a home, the high price of going green does not often pay off. They also are not known for being the most stylish products. Just make sure to know what you are getting into when you go green.
